[Bite-Size Sermon] GRATEFULNESS

Proverbs 27 : 7 One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet. Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are  [Isa. 61:1; 66:2] the poor in spirit, for  [Luke 12:32]   theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:6   “Blessed are those who hunger and  Ps. 42:2; Isa. 55:1, 2; John 7:37   thirst  2 Tim. 2:22; [ch. 6:33]   for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. When I read Proverbs 27:7, somehow it reminds me of the Beautitudes. When we are hungry for God, whatever God throw to us, will "taste sweet". When we are "full", not wanting more, we won't even appreciate the good things God gives.  I think the word to describe this is "gratefulness".  People who think they do not need God are the people who are "full". They won't even appreciate having a roof over their heads, they won't even appreciate having a job, they won't even appreciate having a supportive family and friends. They feel that their li...

Bible Talks

New Living Translation 2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right." I am sure you have come across an experience where you read a same passage at different point in life and that same passage speaks to you, eventhough you are going through different life events.  Last time, I remembered that people often told me that the Bible is not that Spirit-filled/ able to talk to us. We simply take in what we want to take in at that point in time. That means, the same passage contains a few sentences. So when I have problem A, I will just read the sentence that applicable to me. Then when I have problem B, I just read the sentence that applicable to what I am going through and then we go "ah ha!! this is the sign from God. This one speaks to me very loudly". I have been pondering about that and trying to find an e...

The Wipe-out of Religious Rituals

I am overwhelmed by what God is changing through this pandemic. I would like to touch specifically on the impact of Covid-19 to various established religious and cultural rituals. My knowledge of these rituals are not exhaustive, I just want to touch on what I know. Is it just me? Or do anyone else realise what God is doing? Look at how this pandemic interrupted our usual religious and cultural rituals! I shall begin with the latest interruptions.  The Government just announced that there is a limitation for Chinese New Year visitation. I can't even begin how mind-blowing this is. It is in our blood, in our non-questionable ritual for the WHOLE family to gather for Reunion dinner. You CANNOT don't attend. But now.. We can't even go! I am the third generation in the family. So my mother-in-law and her siblings (only, without their children and grandchildren) has to attend the reunion dinner in her mother's house. In normal days, it is absolutely unacceptable that I and m...

Over-Praying

"C ommit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed." Proverbs 16:3 Is there such thing as over-praying? Last night during my cell group discussion, we discussed about whether or not we should pray for every and single thing. For example : "God, please help me with my pimples", "God, should I take on that job", "God, should I help my friend who need to borrow money", "God, should I go for a short mission trip", "God, should I cut my hair", "God, should I buy the red or black car", "God, should I buy the unit at 10th or 11th floor?"  You get the gist. So, during the discussion, I realised that generally for men, they won't pray for every single tiny bitty thing. Because not everything has to be prayed beforehand. God has given us humanly wisdom to decide for ourselves. But they will pray the big items.  But for ladies, we believe it is alright to pray for every single thing. (I myself prayed f...

Finding Treasure

PROVERBS 2   (New International Version) Moral Benefits of Wisdom 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. This answer my question "Why is it hard to find God?" First of all, this WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING is attached to GOD. We can't gain wisdom and understanding without having God in our life. And "having God in our life" is not as straight forward as it sounds. But that is a topic for another day.  To find God, we need to "look for it as for silver and ... as for hidden treasure".. What is the percentage of chance that we find a treasure? I don't know the number exactly, but it is low for sure. This sentence is not to b...
